TM88 and Pi’erre Bourne’s, Yo!88

For musicians Pi’erre Bourne and TM88, who shocked the music world this year, it has been a tremendous year. Drake’s “Way Too Sexy,” which peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, gave TM88 his first credit as the song’s producer. The fifth and last chapter of Pi’erre Bourne’s eponymous series was released concurrently with this success. “Drunk and Nasty” was obviously on everyone’s playlist this year after going viral on Tik Tok and receiving innumerable repetitions.

It only made sense for each artist to combine their talents after years of tenacity and well-received work brought them recognition. The highly anticipated album Yo!88, which was released on December 10, brought together the producing skills of TM88 and the baring skills of Bourne. The release date culminated a successful year for the multi-talents, despite the fact that COVID-19 delayed the project’s initial stages.

The eleven-track album features aspects that are characteristic of both TM88 and Bourne, such as appealing verses and superb rhythms. Respected producers, they both transformed Hip Hop/Rap, bringing new life to a genre that has grown to become a global icon for music fans. Yo!88 creates a powerful offering that will stand through the passage of time, solidifying Bourne’s lyrics and flow on top of TM88’s rhythms.

TM88 and Bourne have been friends for years. They felt it was time to collaborate, and they produced the smash song “Pop Out,” which is a fire track that centers on what they do best. “We said, ‘Well, we really need to do something,’ after I wrote that song. Not one song will do for us. “Let us simply lock in,” says Bourne. Preceding the release of the full-length album, “Pop Out” was depicted in a music video. Wiz Khalifa and Young Nudy are featured on Yo!88, a project that highlights the development and skill of TM88 and Pi’erre Bourne.

Pi’erre Bourne: To be honest, because of COVID, the procedure was a little different from how we typically operate. We were really the ones exchanging files back and forth last year while everyone was still technically under lockdown. Then, at some point this year, I believe, we had a chance to really sit down in the studio and decide on the project’s course, the song titles, the album cover title, and the concept for the music video for “Pop Out.” Although it was a different procedure, it wasn’t harmful. It was simply a small obstacle that needed to be overcome, and once we did, it was much simpler for us to finish everything.

Meet Pi’erre Bourne, the “Magnolia” Producer Who Always Trusts His Gut.

Work ethic is a strength of Jordan Jenks. The 23-year-old musician and producer best known by his stage name Pi’erre Bourne has completed what feels like a lifetime’s worth of experience in the music industry since relocating from Columbia, South Carolina to Atlanta, Georgia in 2014. He’s completed an engineering degree, started “portable studios” to help artists make some extra money, worked as an intern at Hustle Gang, worked as an engineer for Epic Records, left the company to focus on his own production, and most famously, produced six of the fifteen tracks on Playboi Carti’s self-titled debut mixtape—including the huge hit “Magnolia.” Young Nudy is a rising Atlanta rapper and the cousin of 21 Savage.

He has also published and recorded his individual solo projects while doing all of those things and more. On the three audio recordings in his The Chronicles Of Pi’erre series, he displays his melodic dexterity by fusing sung bars with his own spacey, sparse, neon-chord-blotted production, which gives the impression that you are speeding through space. “I can relate to all individuals who’s sitting there,” Pi’erre says, “what the A&R’s doing, the executive in charge, the homeboy Rollin’ down the straightforward, the technician that’s keeping track, and the musician performing; that shit’s crazy.” Pi’erre has seen the process from almost all sides, which is extremely rare and helpful for an entirely freshmen to the industry.

In spite of everything, Pi’erre maintains his composure. Along with making at least 10 beats every day, which you can frequently watch him do on Instagram Live, he has been putting a lot of effort on his fourth solo record, which is set to drop shortly. Additionally, he’s working hard to preserve his amazing, poppin’ video game pause menu sound. Since everything is moving so quickly right now, I’m really not attempting to collaborate with many individuals. It should not be played out, in my opinion.

Pi’erre Bourne dropped by The FADER office in May while visiting his grandma and traveling for business in New York. We spoke about his childhood and early summers spent in Queens, New York; how he learned the ins and outs of the music business while working as an engineer for a big label; how he got game through DJ Burn One; how he connected with Playboi Carti; and how video gaming soundtrack have shaped and affected his style.

South Carolina’s Columbia. We moved down south because my mom was serving in the armed forces. Whenever I was a newborn, my family has been in Queens during the summer months while schools are out of session. The 1970s saw my grandmother move into the same home. As a fuckin’ child, I was first exposed to hip-hop by just seeing folks rap on the neighbourhood. I attempted to rhyme, but since I was so young, I had no idea what words to use. My uncle said, “You got it, you simply require to write it down.

Music has always captivated me. I believe that in elementary school, my uncle taught me how to download songs. He informed me that you could get such garbage by just typing in “instrumental” and your favorite song while looking for a beat. It seems like I grew up in the heyday of computers, amid the constant evolution and advancement of technology. Prior to learning how to properly record oneself, I wanted to rap.

I would become angry because the instrumentals I had obtained didn’t sound like the original song when I recorded it. Even though my initial beats were awful, I persisted. “Fuck is this?” would be my pals’ reaction. Saying things like, “Shut up, I’m going to do this right, I’m just getting started, I’m going to be the best,” Fuck you all.

G-Unit Dipset, Dipset, G-Unit, Dipset, G-Unit. They were ablaze! Furthermore, they weren’t even collaborating. Queens was ablaze. Man, belly. People may speak trash about Queens, but Queens is a big part of hip-hop stuff. Run DMC, Stevie A. Smith, LL Cool J, Salt-n-Pepa, crap, and Hype Williams. These motherfuckers, all of them. The history alone inspired me each time I visited this place. Putting myself in their position, I would think, “Oh, we live down the highway, therefore it must be great too!” I may be from the South, but my roots are in Queens.

It is peculiar. I am unable to claim to have attended this church or that particular school. I even learnt how to ride a bike up here, though, since I learned so much.

How did you begin producing beats at first?

I was trying to emulate my uncle Dwight! He was a fly guy with all the J’s and all the foams. He tried making beats, sketched, rapped, and did graphic design. His PC was filled with Fruity Loops. Since he is quite interested in computers and other stuff, I assumed he was playing a video game, but I’m not sure how he accomplished that.

Lemme try, I thought. As he knows I’ll figure things out, he typically simply lets me go ahead. He would go to work and to school because all would continue to stay in school for the remaining month when I would come up here for the holiday season. He would look back and hear that I was really just on that crap all day, and he would say something like “You could have been onto something.” I think he handed me his PC two summers later. You’re better than me, dude, fuck it. Take this sh*t.

My grandmother’s brother, my uncle, is well-known in Belize, but I’m not sure how big of a star he is there, and he performs reggae music. His YouTube videos have been my daily viewing for the last two years. His crap is what I always watch when I need inspiration. Since 2011, I haven’t really listened to musicians or other stuff. Just to be sure, I wanted to make sure my beats are unique from everyone else’s.

Why did you travel to Atlanta?

I persuaded my parents to allow me to return to school because I had dropped out of my graphic design program. I completed a year, received a fine, and was suspended. That was the first time I had ever been in trouble at school, so I’m not a horrible guy. My mother was taken aback. I knew I had to do this music crap because of it. I made an effort to return to school, even though I didn’t have any music. Still performed poorly. Why do I feel like a dumbass in this place, I asked myself.

I think I was simply being careless when I came up to Queens after that. I recently turned 18 and use marijuana every day because my grandparents were old and I was free to do as I pleased. I went to work at Walmart and Target and visited my dad in South Carolina. It was awful. However, I had plenty of time to reflect about my true-life goals. I was determined to accomplish this musical thing, but how in the world was I going to pull it off? “You constantly save yourself, then attend school for that shit,” my uncle told me when I spoke with him. You could spend all of your time in the studio.

It seems like every six months, someone explodes. I believed that traveling to Atlanta would increase my prospects. I was more at ease since I didn’t know anyone. I did that when I moved on the market by myself. At first, it was really difficult, but it was well worth it. Despite completing the program, I never received my certificate. I even retook the last section after nine months since they indicated I failed something.
